To play this guitar people always use a pick but you can also pluck it with your fingers you just won't get the same powerful noise. This guitar has pickups that receive the vibration of the strings and transmit it into a speaker. The common types of pickups are magnetic which is how they sense the vibration in the strings. The sound that the pickups send are to weak for a speaker so you can connect a guitar amplifier to send the signal to the speaker and it will make it sound louder.
